The West End, when a packet won't do

From Hillhead or Partick this is a trip, and it should feel like one. There is no train from the West End to Shawlands. There is a butcher's counter at the end of the trip that will cut bone-in karahi pieces and mince with the fat you asked for, which is the reason to bother.

How to actually get here

The subway brings you to St Enoch, which sits beside Glasgow Central. From Central, ScotRail runs direct to Shawlands on the Cathcart Circle, about 10 to 15 minutes, or to Crossmyloof on the East Kilbride line. Then a walk: about 10 minutes from Shawlands station, under 10 from Crossmyloof, to 44 Kilmarnock Road.

Driving is the other honest option. Put the address in the map and follow it. We have on-street parking around Kilmarnock Road. Check the signs for the hours and any charges. We don't deliver to the West End.

When the trip is worth it

Come when the dish cares about the cut. Shoulder on the bone for karahi. Lamb mince with fat in it for seekh, not the driest pack on a shelf. Diced beef for a pie that has to feed people. A chicken opened flat for the grill. A whole lamb, if you've asked ahead and you're in the car.

Don't come across the city for a single lemon. We do sell lemons. That's not the point of the journey.

What you'll find that a supermarket skips

Mutton that is sheep, labelled as mutton, for the long pot. Goat only if you ask and the butcher can get it. No pork. The grocery aisle so the spices aren't a second pilgrimage. One conversation instead of a label you're not sure about.

Is it worth it?

Is there a direct train from the West End?

No. Subway to St Enoch, then a ScotRail train from Glasgow Central to Shawlands or Crossmyloof.

What should I cross the city for?

A cut you'll notice: bone-in lamb, mince with the fat you asked for, a chicken cut for the dish, a whole lamb if you've asked ahead and you're driving.

Do you deliver to the West End?

No.
