When we photographed the shop in October 2026 the crates out front were full of oranges, with lemons beside them. Fruit changes with the deliveries, so have a look on the day.
Picking one
Weight tells you more than colour. A heavy orange has more juice. The skin should be firm and bright, not soft or wrinkled. A little green on the skin doesn't mean it isn't ripe.
Our tipThe zest has more perfume than the juice. Grate it before you cut the orange, while the skin is still firm.
Juice and zest
For a marinade, the juice sharpens yoghurt and helps spices cling to lamb or chicken. The zest, grated fine, goes into a roast rub or a cake. Grate it before you squeeze, and stop when you reach the white pith, which is bitter.
Keeping them
In a fruit bowl they last about a week. In the fridge, two weeks or more. Once cut, cover the half and use it within a couple of days.
Juice or zest?
How do I get more juice from an orange?
Roll it firmly on the worktop before you cut it, or warm it in your hands for a minute.
The fruit tables are on the pavement at 44 Kilmarnock Road, Shawlands, Glasgow G41 3NH. How to find us.
